The Murfreesboro Youth Orchestra, through its Strings Alive! Program, provides the loan of string instruments to qualifying students at no rental cost. The desire is to encourage the study of a stringed instrument and/or provide the use of an instrument to a student who may not personally own or have access to a instrument.
The following specific policies apply to the Strings Alive! Program:

The student must express an interest in learning to play the violin, viola, cello or string bass.

Student must be taking private lessons.

Preference is given to PSO or MYO members first, then to qualifying non-members, as long as instruments are available.

The student may use the loaned instrument that is owned by the MYO for one season (approximately one year), then must return the instrument to the MYO. This rule does not apply to bass players. The MYO Music Director and the private teacher will determine the specific length of use for bass instruments.

While the MYO insures its instruments, the student’s family is responsible for assuring that proper care of the instrument is always taken. A loaned instrument must be protected from weather, banging against walls or doors, and use utmost care when transporting the instrument, especially celli and basses. When possible, a case will be provided with the instrument. The instrument must always be transported in its protective case.

The student’s family is responsible for the care and routine maintenance of the instrument. This includes replacing broken strings, supplying rosin, keeping the instrument clean and always keeping the instrument in a safe place.

Loaned instruments must not be left in vehicles for prolonged periods of time, exposing them to excessive heat or cold.
