Music lovers are invited to the grand finale of
the Murfreesboro Youth Orchestra's
2003-04 Season, the annual spring concert, Tuesday, May 11. The
lively and exciting concert program features a range of classical,
contemporary, and popular compositions from. The concert is sponsored
by the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee.
A highlight of the concert is the premiere performance
of Snow Day, an original composition written for the orchestra by
Dr. Michael Linton of MTSU's McLean School of Music. Also highlighting
the concert are solo performances by the winners of this year's
MYO Concerto Competition, clarinetist
Jesse B.Langston and flutist Beth Ervin.
Jesse, a senior at Warren County High School,
is featured soloist on Carl Stamitz's Clarinet Concerto no. 3. Beth,
a senior at Blackman High, is featured on Carl Reinecke's Ballade
for Flute and Orchestra.
Also featured are the young musicians of the Preparatory
String Orchestra.
The program begins at 7:00 p.m. at MTSU's Wright
Music Hall. Tickets are available at the door or can be purchased
in advance from the MYO business
office: 895-4513.
The MYO consists
of two orchestras with approximately 100 members. Students come
from nine counties in middle Tennessee, drawn to the exciting venue
the MYO provides for young musicians
to grow musically and to have fun as well. The orchestra plays a
wide repertoire of classical and contemporary orchestral music.
Each season includes three subscription concerts. In addition, the
orchestra performs at outdoor festivals and at special school programs,
and occasionally plays alongside other orchestras. The MYO
especially benefits from the unique program Strings Alive!!, which
supplies stringed instruments to students interested in playing
with the MYO. Led by executive
director Ellen Gassler and conductor Susan Mullen, the MYO
currently includes over fifty musicians between the ages of nine
and eighteen. Affiliated with the MYO
is the Preparatory String Orchestra,
which provides younger, less advanced string players the opportunity
to refine their reading and ensemble skills with the goal of eventually
playing with the MYO. The PSO
performs in concert with the MYO
three times annually and performs in special school programs as
well. The PSO currently comprises
twenty-five musicians and is led by conductor Sam Oliva.
The Murfreesboro
Youth Orchestra is supported by the Tennessee Arts Commission
and the National Endowment for the Arts.
