
The Conductor & Music Director is responsible for the
artistic and educational direction and programming for the
Murfreesboro Youth Orchestra and its training orchestra.
Duties include planning, preparing and conducting subscription
concerts, the Music to Go run-out tour, and other
concerts and ensemble appearances which may be planned in
a given season; recruiting and auditioning new orchestra
members and re-auditioning members annually for seating
placement; working as part of the organization’s leadership
team with the Executive Director and sixteen member Board
of Directors; developing a collaborative relationship with
a major university in rehearsal and concert calendar planning;
and serving as a spokesperson for the promotion and advancement
of the orchestra and its mission.
Exceptional musicianship as a performer, conductor and
music teacher, along with extensive knowledge of and experience
working with all families of orchestral instruments; strong
interpersonal and communication skills, leadership ability,
and a desire to work with enthusiastic and energetic youth.
Exceptional organization skills are required. This is a
part-time, year-round position. A Bachelor’s degree
is the minimum requirement.
The Murfreesboro Youth Orchestra (MYO) has been led by
founder Susan Mullen since its inception in 1997. The current
roster of nearly 60 student musicians represents seven counties
in Middle Tennessee. Since its founding the orchestra has
commissioned 15 new works by Tennessee composers, and performed
a varied repertoire. The staff of three includes two year-round,
part-time conductors and an part-time, year-round executive
director, all possessing multiple music degrees.

The Conductor of the Preparatory String Orchestra works
in conjunction with the MYO Music Director to prepare students
to become MYO members. Duties include planning, preparing
and conducting subscription concerts, and other concerts
and ensemble appearances which may be planned in a given
season; recruiting and auditioning new members; working
as part of the organization’s leadership team with
the Executive Director and sixteen member Board of Directors.
Rehearsal and concert dates for this orchestra coincide
with those of the Murfreesboro Youth Orchestra.
Excellent ability to teach and conduct elementary through
junior high school string students; familiarity with music
for this playing level is required. An energetic and enthusiastic
commitment to teaching fundamentals and strong interpersonal
and communication skills is also required. This is a part-time,
year-round position.
The Preparatory String Orchestra has been providing elementary
and intermediate ensemble string training for students in
Middle Tennessee since 1997. The eventual goal of this training
is for membership in the Murfreesboro Youth Orchestra. The
PSO currently boasts a roster of approximately 25 students
and rehearses weekly.
