The mission of the Murfreesboro
Youth Orchestra is to promote the optimum musical development
and education of young musicians through the study and performance
of a diverse curriculum of challenging ensemble music. MYO
aspires to increase community awareness of and participation in
the musical experiences of the youth in our area.
ELIGILBILITY Membership in the MYO
is open to young musicians from ages 8 to 19. There are
nearly 100 members from 9 counties and 18 Middle Tennessee
schools who perform with the MYO
and PSO.
REQUIREMENTS Members must either participate
in their school instrumental music programs or take private music
lessons.
COSTS The annual tuition fee is $220.00
for MYO and $150.00
for PSO. There is a
discount for families with more than one member. Scholarships
for membership and private music lessons are available and
awarded on the basis of need.
AUDITIONS All members must audition each year
prior to placement. Entry is based on proficiency.
REHEARSALS Both orchestras rehearse weekly
on Thursday evenings in the Wright Music Building on the
campus of Middle Tennessee State University. The MYO
rehearses from 6:30 – 9:00 PM until November 1, and
then rehearses from 6:00 – 8:30 PM throughout the
remainder of the season. The PSO
rehearses from 6:00 - 7:30 PM throughout the year. (See
Schedule) PROGRAMS Both orchestras perform three
subscription concerts each season in the Hinton Music Hall
in the Wright Music Building (McLean School of Music) on
the MTSU campus. The MYO
and PSO take Music To
Go Tours to many area schools in order to provide free,
live musical education opportunities to school children.
There are numerous opportunities to work with guest artists
and to perform new compositions each season.
ORCHESTRAS Young musicians can find an orchestra
to fit their individual needs and interests. Each orchestra and
ensemble is led by its own highly qualified conductor.

A full orchestra for the most advanced musicians.
PREPARATORY STRINGS ORCHESTRA
An orchestra for string students with a minimum of one year of
traditional instruction or Suzuki students at the Book II level.

The MYO creates a musical
education experience and discipline that nurtures a lifelong love
and respect for the arts. Over 70 hours of rehearsal and instruction
are provided each season in addition to performance opportunities.
The Wright Music Building is located at 1439 Falkinberry Drive
on the MTSU campus in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Visitors are always
welcome at rehearsals.
